This class provides an introduction to Library of Congress subject headings and the process of assigning subject headings to bibliographic works. Topics covered include:
- How to determine the subject(s) of a work
- Types of Library of Congress subjects, including topical, geographic, genre, children’s, and subdivisions
- Review of MARC coding in subject authority records, including fixed and variable fields
- How to construct a subject heading string
- Searching in the OCLC authority file
- Use of established headings in bibliographic records
Prerequisite
Attendees should be familiar with MARC coding and authority records.
