10 am Keynote: Coping with Compassion Fatigue by Amy Franco
Libraries are increasingly adding social services to their workload, but many library workers do not have the training or support that is expected for social workers or mental health experts. Most professionals agree that compassion fatigue is a combination of secondary trauma and burnout, and is commonly seen among first responders who are exposed to traumatic events.
Though it is rewarding to help the most vulnerable people in the community, empathetic people are also at risk for taking on the emotional burdens and stressors of others. Playing a caring role can come with a price. If you ever feel worn out at work, overwhelmed, or preoccupied with someone you're trying to help, come to this workshop to assess your own personal level of compassion fatigue and learn self-care methods to help you cope.
Amy Franco is a sought-after speaker and trainer helping librarians and library workers reach their full potential. With more than 15 years’ experience in the retail, customer service, and library industries, Amy’s programs are filled with proven techniques that can be applied immediately. She holds degrees from College of DuPage, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the current Executive Director of the Hillside Public Library in suburban Chicago. In her previous position, she led a nationally renowned programming team at the Glen Ellyn Public Library and oversaw all print and digital collections, instruction, and outreach services for adults and teens. Amy is passionate for the design and coordination of training for public library workers, strategic planning, and community engagement efforts; skills that have solidified her reputation as a leader in creative programming and continuing education for library workers.

Media Literacy with Dr. Cory Barker
Dr. Cory Barker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Bradley University, where he teaches classes on journalism, new media, and the media industries. He recently completed a year-long media literacy education program with the Peoria Public Library and is developing a media literacy podcast with Bradley’s Cullom-Davis Library and WCBU. He will speak about how librarians can help our patrons with media literacy and how to spot fakes in both print and media sources.
How a Positive Safety Culture Wins
Brandon Stokes, security officer at Champiagn Public Library, shares how their library chooses to approach difficult customer interactions, the culture shift, and illustrates the effects of a positive safety culture. He will include examples of problematic situations that library staff may face during any given day, including eating/sleeping, noisy/rowdy behavior or customers asking personal questions, substance abuse/alcohol use, and then having the hardest conversations about having too much luggage and foul fragrances. He will also touch on 1st amendment audits as well. Finally, he will discuss restoring the customer relationship after a difficult conversation in addition to how staff can cope with traumatic incidents.
RAILS Delivery Chat: Robert will provide and update on the new delivery codes as well as answer any questions about delivery.
