"Gimme 3 feet!" The first time Kevin Hofmann heard this saying he was 10 years old playing backyard basketball in Detroit. Three feet is the required space you are to give your opponent as they attempt to inbound the basketball. If the space is not given the person trying to get the ball inbounds may force you to back up by hurling the ball at your midsection.
Everything you need to know about inclusion and belonging is learned from this simple command. It teaches the importance of allowing everyone to fully be who they are in their own three feet. It teaches the importance of boundaries, the benefits of honoring each person's 3 feet, and the power that is gained or lost depending on whether the employee is given space to be their true selves.
