Third Thursdays CE: The Changing Landscape of Book Bans and Censorship–How to Get and Stay Prepared

All Third Thursday CE sessions will be streamed live, but participants who are also attending the IHLS Members Matter meeting are encouraged to attend both events in person at a rotating location.
This Month
Illinois is a leader in addressing book bans with its legislation, but that doesn’t mean censorship or attempts to ban books have gone away across the state. This presentation will look at several instances of censorship and targeted attacks on libraries in Illinois, as well as highlight ongoing censorship trends across the country that could make their way to Illinois. Attendees will walk away with practical tips for both preparing to address these issues if or when they arise, as well as touch on the mental health impacts of our censorious climate on library workers. To get the most out of this presentation, it will help to have reviewed your library’s collection management and materials challenge policies. If you don’t have one or it hasn’t been updated since 2020, this presentation will help you find areas to strengthen those policies.
