We’ll cover the basics of weeding in public and school libraries, including those tricky sections! Bring your questions and best practices! The last section will be the Polaris reports that can help make weeding a breeze. The chat will be monitored and moderated by IHLS staff.
This workshop will be divided and recorded in three sections:
Part 1: Weeding in a Public Library
Is the thought of starting a weeding project at your library completely overwhelming? Where do you start? How will you find the time? What do you do with the books you weeded? Is it really okay to throw away books - precious books that define our librarian existence??? Let's talk through these questions and more! Weeding is a vital part of collection development and an opportunity to strengthen your library’s collection. By the end of this 30-minute presentation, my goals are to make you feel confident about going into a weeding project, able to make tough decisions about your collection, and perhaps find it just a little fun.
Part 2: Weeding in a School Library
Weeding is an essential skill for school librarians. This presentation will help you identify why you need to weed, what you need to weed, and the most difficult part of weeding – how to dispose of weeded materials. Your students and staff deserve an up-to-date and current collection, so learn the ins and outs of school collection weeding.
Part 3: Polaris Reports and Weeding
Reports in Polaris can simplify your weeding project! Learn about which reports to run and best Polaris practices to make collection management more efficient. You will learn how to produce custom reports to fit your weeding criteria and get a quick preview of Leap’s Weeding Workflow. Weeding Workflow in Leap offers staff to take on different roles while weeding item records.
Session is interactive, and participation is encouraged.
