This month...
Active Threat Training
Speaker: Sean Ater
Session Description:
This training session equips library staff with practical, evidence-based tools, operational guidelines, and agency-aligned protocols to respond effectively and confidently during an active-threat incident.
The session also examines national trends in active-threat events, with an emphasis on early identification and prevention within community-centered settings. Participants will learn how to recognize concerning behaviors, respond appropriately, and contribute to a culture of safety.
· Recognizing warning signs and “leakage” behaviors. Learn how to spot concerning behaviors, such as threats, talk of violence, or unusual changes in behavior, and understand when something may be a warning sign rather than just routine disruption.
· Using the Pathway to Violence model. Understand how harmful actions can develop over time and how to recognize early stages, so concerns can be addressed before they escalate.
· Taking action: reporting and responding. Know what to do when something feels wrong—how to document concerns, report them through the right channels, and respond safely and appropriately.
