Mount Carmel Public Library was built August 1970. Book moving began at the Mt. Carmel Public Library August 3, 1970, at 9:00 a.m. when first, second and third grade students from Mt. Carmel and Wabash County converged on the old library, gathered up an armload of books and made the three-block trek to the brand-new Mt. Carmel Public Library deposited their books, and then turned around and headed back to the now closed library on East 5th Street to gather up more books and start the trip to the new library again. There were 40-50 young movers, Cadet Girl Scouts, and the volunteer teachers who assisted with the move. The book moving parade got under way again this morning at 9:00 a.m. with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students handling the moving, followed by 7th, 8th, and high school students tomorrow, and adult volunteers on Thursday.
